"I was my family’s first college graduate and didn’t have much confidence in my intellect, but the way Quang listened to what I had to say put me at ease from the start."
"Grief is heavy, but love is weightless." what a comfort to read this line. This was a beautiful piece to read and reflect on. I'm grateful to Grub Street for linking to it in a recent newsletter. Thank you, Kristen, for sharing the story of you and Dad with us.
I agree: heartwarming story, beautifully written, and that line, “Grief is heavy...” is just what I needed to read today as I’m missing my dad.The pen is stunning, but the photo of your daughter and her grandpa warms my soul. Thank you for sharing this memory.
Kristen Paulson-Nguyen ~ I love this story and had tears when I read the last paragraph. How wonderful that you had a father-in-love who obviously loved you and was delighted to teach you and share all things with you. I feel that he cared deeply that you also taught him. My feeling is strong that he somehow knows that you have his pen and he loves that! Thank you for sharing the loving story of your dad.
This essay lifts me, sends me floating across the universe with bells gonging through my spirit and monks nodding and smiling at my soul. The final paragraph is a poem. "Grief is heavy, but love is weightless." Wow. Thank you for this! (I live daily on Thich Nhat Han's voice & teachings. It's funny for me to imagine him doing something so mundane as going to high school. Thanks, too, for bringing him down to earth!)
Thank you so much for your kind words, and for reading my piece. I'm glad it resonated with you. I was also surprised to learn that my in-laws helped Thay get a visa for France.
Oh, Kristen! This is so so lovely! I love how you bring your Dad to life in such a short space. I love the shape of this tiny essay. I felt a pow in my heart when I read the line, "Grief is heavy, but love is weightless." YES. Thank you for this gift!
