I love the memories of sitting in your dad's car and listening to John Denver and Glen Campbell! I was immediately brought back to my childhood, although rather than safety I felt fear! My father would drink too much at dinner (at a place far from home) and then drive us all (8 children) home down the dark winding roads, smoking a cigar and playing music on the radio. I would sit in the way back, "steering" and pressing my foot on an imaginary break, trying to control the car as my siblings slept. My dad never knew that I was awake, so he'd speed and weave and sometimes sing all the way home. (Somehow we always arrived safely.)
Funny how one detail can evoke so many feelings!
