Thanks for sharing your Dad's story. The handing off of the Habs hat to your son touched my heart -- just another example of the simple ways we bind our generations together.

Thank you, Ed. I didn't realize the significance of the gift until after my dad had passed. But I'm grateful for it now.

Such a beautiful and honest tribute to your father. People are complex, with rough and beautiful sides to them. Our grief often needs time to reflect on the nuance of both. Cheering you on as you continue doing the work!

What a lovely piece. You brought him to life for us. Evocative writing is magic that way.

Thank you Jennifer. I had some amazing help from Deborah who edited my words in a beautiful way.

Gillian, I can imagine your father getting up to all kinds of fun and inventing projects. So multi-talented. And sadly, many men in the past did not get what they needed to tend to feelings--their own and others. I love you have his HAB's hat and can use it as an object for remembering him with your son. A true keepthing. Thank you for sharing this.

Thank you Debra, I appreciate your thoughts. I agree, I don't think men of that generation were encouraged to develop their emotions in a healthy way. It helps me to keep perspective when I think about my dad and our difficulties. Also all the funny and sweet memories I have of him.

The way you describe him, it feels like he was probably as surprised at his behavior with your son as you were and the hat was his way of acknowledging that. Sorry for the dime-store analysis--but your description of your dad brought him to life for me and I felt a lot of compassion for you all as he dealt with his illness. Beautiful tribute.

Thank you Cindy. I try to remember he wasn't himself when we had the last visit in NY. (Brain surgery changes a person - he had become less patient and more short-tempered after the tumor was removed.) Also, there were loads of nice moments during that trip as well: my parents came to my son's swim lesson, and visited my aikido dojo where I taught class, and we shared some great meals and glasses of wine. :-)

Not just the legs synced, but the smiles and big hearts look aligned, too. May you remember him well.
